The Welsh have always been fierce competitors in the sporting arena. The hard men from Wales have built a reputation for uncompromising fierceness on the Rugby Union field and have a proud history when it comes to football.
As far as the Rugby is concerned, the world-famous city of Newport Rugby Football Club has been gathering accolades ever since beating the1963 All Blacks team- a feat which has gone down (quite rightly) in the history of this proud club as one of its finest moments.
However, it’s not only Newport RFC that has a proud history and an active set of fixtures today. There are another 8 clubs from the city area that are playing top class rugby.
Football Clubs from Newport also have a long and illustrious history. In recent years clubs like Newport County have achieved considerable success, reaching the quarter-finals of the demanding European Cup Winners Cup in 1981. However, the club fell on hard times and eventually filed for bankruptcy in 1988. The club was however reformed and has slowly been making its way back to the limelight. The club was promoted to the Football League for the 2013 / 14 season and continues to search for its former glory.
However, it’s not only rugby and football where this city has a proud history. The city is today home to a number of world-class golfing venues including the Celtic Manor Resort which plays host to the Wales Open, an integral part of the European tour which sees golfing luminaries from all over the continent gather to play on some of the finest fairways and greens on the continent. There are numerous other public and members-only courses within putting distance of the city centre.
The history of tennis is also one which the residents can be justifiably proud of. Key games in the 1906 International Lawn Tennis Challenge (which is widely regarded as the forerunner of the Davis Cup) were played at the Newport Athletics Club and the sport continues to be extremely popular with both visitors and residents of the town.
Those visiting the city, as well as those who call it home are also afforded plenty of opportunities to enjoy world-class sporting venues for a number of other sporting codes.
Boxing, cricket, cycling and numerous other sports can be enjoyed in the city and its environs. In fact, Newport has also played host to the International Cross Country Championships on numerous occasions.
